According to Euronews, the EES (EU Entry/Exit System) starts on 17 November 2024. It is a new IT system that tracks border crossings in the European Union. The EU Commission has yet to announce the official starting day, but according to the journalists, the final date will be postponed to 17 November from the tenth of the same month. Moreover, the system should have launched as early as 2022, but several technical setbacks postponed the date.
How does EES work?
Upon entering the European Union, Passport Control Officers will scan your fingerprint and face and record it in a digital file. The good news is that there will be no more stamping, so if you are a frequent traveller, you can save some free space in your passport. If there is self-service biometric border crossing equipment or you can use the mobile application, you can enter the Schengen zone without meeting a passport control officer.
What is the difference between EES and ETIAS?
ETIAS is the travel authorisation, and EES is the practical system you use when entering the EU. Applying through the ETIAS is an entry requirement for visa-exempt people travelling to 30 European countries. The application is valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever happens first.
Can you evade EES or ETIAS?
If you are a third-country national, you will definitely meet these EU border crossing IT systems. There are no checks inside the European Union and the Schengen zone; you can freely enjoy beautiful Europe. If you need a visa to enter Europe, you will have your entry permit, and the EES system will screen you when you arrive.
