Residency programmes of the European Microstates

Living in a European microstate is for the wealthy. These sovereign little countries have become symbols of peace and prosperity.

Discus Holding Ltd's experts can support your application to become a resident of any of the European mini or macrostates—except for the Vatican, as becoming a resident there is beyond our scope.

Let's look at the residency and residency by investment programs of the European macrostates:

What is a macrostate?
Macro or mini-states are small sovereign countries, mainly in Europe. These countries and nations have small populations and unique cultural and political heritages.

Which are the European macrostates?

  • Andorra is a principality in the Pyrenees Mountains between Spain and France. It has tax-friendly policies and famous ski resorts.
  • Liechtenstein is between Switzerland and Austria, famous for its medieval castles and strong financial sector.
  • Malta is an island nation in the Mediterranean, celebrated for its historical sites and vibrant culture. It is a low-tax jurisdiction with a fast-track residency to citizenship by investment program.
  • Monaco is on the French Riviera, synonymous with luxury, casinos, and the Formula 1 Grand Prix. There is no personal income tax.
  • San Marino is an enclave in the Italian mountains; it claims to be the world's oldest republic.
  • Vatican City is the world's smallest state, serving as the spiritual centre for Catholics globally.

Andora offers its resident status for applicants who invest more than 400,000 euros in the local economy or financial sector. San Marino attracts applicants who invest in a local company or register one. They must stay in the country for more than 270 days per year, and there is also a bank deposit requirement of 150,000 euros. Liechtenstein does not have a formal residency by investment program. However, people who can maintain themselves and prove local interests can become residents there.

Malta is the headquarters of Discus Holdings Ltd. We have decades of experience in the always-changing residency and citizenship by investment solutions.

You can quickly become a resident of Malta if you donate at least 80,000 euros to the state and an additional 20,000 euros to an NGO and buy or rent a property for a qualified amount, depending on the location.

In 2025, Malta has a unique fast-track residency to citizenship solution in the European Union. You can become a citizen after only one year of residency (donation of 750,000 euros) or after three years (600,000 euros donation). The applicants for citizenship must also donate ten thousand euros to scientific, cultural or philanthropic causes for an NGO. Real estate purchase (700,000 euros( or rent (minimum annual 16,000 euros) is another requirement. Click here for the details of the Maltese fast-track citizenship program!

Interestingly, the Principality of Monaco, as a symbol of wealth, looks unreachable. However, the microstate has one of the simplest residency-by-investment programs. You must deposit in a local bank, own sufficient funds outside the country, and prove steady income. Do you want to become a resident of Monaco?
